Gucci was started in Florence in 1921, by Guccio Gucci and was initially a leather goods and luggage company. Gucci was inspired by British refinement acquired during his time working at the Savoy Hotel in London. He wanted to combine this look with the craftsmanship and skills of his native Italy to create a unique style that had never been seen before.
As Gucci’s success grew, the hardship of war forced him to look at new materials due to supply issues. Experiments with canvas and bamboo resulted in the iconic Bamboo Bag – a design seen to this day on many Gucci handbags. The curve of the handle is said to be inspired by a horses saddle, a theme that continues throughout the Gucci heritage: The famous green-red-green stripe came from a saddle girth design which inspired Gucci in the 1950s.
Today, Gucci is a worldwide fashion label. Named ‘Most Desirable Luxury Brand in The World’ in 2007, their representation of exclusivity and Italian craftsmanship continues to attract celebrities and fashion icons to adorn themselves in its designs. Creator of the Jackie Bag, the aforementioned Bamboo Bag, and the iconic Flora Print, Gucci continues to leave the fashion world wondering what it will create next.
